Keyword Research

A keyword is simply a word or a phrase that someone keys into the search area of a browser to find a list of potential websites to visit to find what they are looking for.

If my keyword is “Internet Marketing Perth” and someone types that into their search box on their browser (see below) then they will have returned a whole lot of entries that Google (or Bing etc) believe are relevant to that search. If my website is listed first then I will get (on average) a whopping 40%+ of all the clicks for that keyword.

The trick is to find keywords that are relevant to your business and the products you are selling, keywords that are attracting a decent volume of search requests every day plus keywords that are not targeted by the bigger players in your market whose websites have been around for a long time and have lots of backlinks (because you will not be able compete with them in the short term).

Sounds difficult eh ? Well tools do exist to help you do this. They help you to find the right market niche for your business and to find the right keywords for that microniche.

Create Content

Google loves relevant content and lots of it. Why ? Because your site visitors love relevant content and lots of it.

Google is a business that makes an obscene amount of money from selling advertising. The more people that use Google the more money it makes.

It is in Google’s best interests to give its users the best results for any given search then. How does it make a decision on what is the best results ?

Part of the equation (and a very important part) is the relevance and the currency of your content (how recent that content is).

So your old website that was built 5 years ago and hasn’t changed since is not such a good candidate for Google (they know it hasn’t changed because the Googlebot checks back every so often – the less you add content to the site the less often they check back).

We call this sort of website an “online brochure” and its days have long been numbered.

So you must have a website where you can add content consistently YOURSELF. Or you must pay someone to add content every week or at least every month.

It is said in Internet Marketing circles that “Content is King” and this is absolutely correct.

Optimize Content

The Googlebot has a hell of a lot of work to do searching every website on the Interweb.

If you make its job to get to and understand your content on your website then it will rate your site low and other, more optimized sites higher. Not good for you !!!

You must make the Googlebot’s life easier when it comes to your website.

Anyone with a flash website take note – the Googlebot struggles to see any content inside flash. You are getting no value from those lovely moving images and animation which you cannot change or update yourself. Get rid of it or use it very sparingly at best !

Promote Content

Build Backlinks

A backlink is like a vote for your website from another website. The more backlinks you have to your website and individual pages on your site, the more Google will rate your website.

All backlinks are not created equal though. A backlink from a website (from a a webpage in fact) ranked higher by Google will get you more kudos in Google’s eyes.

It is often said that a link from a webpage with a Page Rank of 0 is worth one point. A link from a webpage with a Rank of 1 is worth 5 points, rank 2 is 25 points, Rank 3 is 125 points etc etc.

So getting quality backlinks is very important but how do you achieve this ?

Well backlinking is a mine field and there are myriad ways of getting quality backlinks to your website.

Google itself says that is sufficient to publish quality content and the quality links will come.

This is correct but does not tell anywhere near the entire story:-

  • You must publicize your content (see promote content),
  • You must become a part of your industry and community commenting on blogs or websites that are the pinnacle in your industry,
  • You must publish articles in high quality article websites,
  • You must subscribe to high quality directories,
  • and much, much more…..

and these are just the “legal” (white hat) ways of getting quality backlinks.

Analyze Results

How much traffic am I getting to my website per day ? Is it seasonal, does it come on various days of the week ?

Where is my traffic coming from ? If I make more effort in one form of social media marketing (Twitter ?) do I get more traffic ? What about if this month I concentrate on Facebook – do I get more traffic ?

Which pages on my site are getting the most traffic ? If I do more in this area do I get more traffic ? Is this what the people are looking for ?

How many people visit my website and click straight back off again (bounce rate) ? How many stick around and read a few pages on the website ? How many pages do they read ?

If you know all this then you can surely makes changes to your website which will make it attract more business and close more sales.
